Gentle stretching with Tai Chi puts your health in balance

Gentle stretching with Tai Chi puts your health in balance.  This is such a wonderful way to keep a flexible body and mind as we age.  The art of Tai Chi is so gentle and persuasive.  The science of it is to empower and enhance longevity.

"Tai chi is an ideal activity for older, active adults, says a new study from researchers at the School of Health and Life Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland.
The practice, which features a series of gentle movements and stretches, helps improve balance and coordination, which can help prevent breaks, fractures and falls.
"Many of my students have lowered their blood pressure, improved circulation, de-stressed, reduced or eliminated their medications and have met friends for life in the process," says Jake Mace, owner and head instructor at Phoenix Longevity Arts in Tempe."

Mace, 30, studied tai chi, Asian culture and martial arts at Arizona State University and abroad in Beijing and has been a tai chi instructor for more than a decade. His students have ranged from 18 to 80. There is also a wide range of health benefits, he says.
Tai chi has different levels of expertise and styles to accommodate any experience level. Some focus on mental health, maintenance and spirituality, while others focus on more physical aspects, including martial arts.
"Physically, tai chi improves balance, muscle strength, joint health and organ function," Mace says. "Mentally, tai chi has been shown to improve mental focus and brain function by creating and stimulating neural pathways in the brain."
Tai chi can be done as your workout of the day or as a soft, relaxing complement to any daily workout.
"It is the ability to sync the physical and mental together," he says. "The Chinese call this the mind/body connection, or 'yin yang.' "

"An hourlong tai chi class can burn 250 to 500 calories."

Gentle stretching with Tai Chi puts your health in balance.  One of  the "laws" of nature is that of balance.  It is called "homeostasis".  All in balance.  Tai Chi is a gentle and pleasing way to start that journey.
