The God Squad: Osama bin Laden's death raises some moral, spiritual questions

Rabbi Marc Gellman has written a stern and just opinion on the celebrations that center around the assassination of Osama bin Laden.  He pleads a strong case for moderation and consideration of the underlying spiritual truths about all mankind, even the monsters among us.

"Killing such a criminal is an act of justice, not revenge, and unless your religious or philosophical inclinations are pacifist, it is an act of morally justified self-defense, "One who sheds the blood of man, by man will his blood be shed, for in the image of God made He man." (Genesis 9:6).

"Such victories remind us that radical evil is real but also that radical evil will not prevail. We can be killed, but we cannot be occupied. We can be tormented, but we cannot be defeated. Knowing this is a rejoicing strength."

The Rabbi reminds us that we were born pure, and we die pure, and that what happens in between is entirely up to each of us.

Love above all - A Christian Science perspective

Many may be experiencing ambivalent feelings and thoughts toward the death of Osama bin Laden.   Here is a humbling and loving perspective from the Christian Science perspective.

"We need to seal this decade of unrest with love. I don’t mean personally loving someone who perpetrated one of the most senseless and darkest killings of the innocents. Yes, Jesus charges in the Sermon on the Mount to “love your enemies” (Matt. 5:44). This doesn’t mean we remain victims. Rather he is asking us to triumph in the fact that in the end only Love – the highest good, which some people call God – can stop violence, division, and conflict."

"There is no law against those who can hold steadfastly to these qualities as much as possible. There is no enemy, no demon, no curse, no revenge, in perfect Love. Divine Love can transform someone from hatred and violence to reason, wisdom, justice, and moral strength".

This is an encouraging outlook on how one aligns oneself with the higher power and lives that truth.
